Two Birds Jumping into Joy
May 5, 2010
Of course I have to title this, it’s my duty as an artist!
I’m very pleased to announce to my friends and followers
of my art some good news in my life. On May 1st I became
engaged to Cathy, the woman I made some major changes
in my life so I could be with on a daily basis. Before I could
barely get the words out of my mouth she said yes!
As I wanted it was a beautiful setting down by a river with
little ducks and some flowers at our feet, along with some
mud. I gave her my grandmothers ring which was made
back in the 1930’s. It fit perfectly, just needs a tiny bit of
repair but she loves it and I can’t wait to get it back from
jeweler and onto her finger again.
I will of course announce a date for the wedding when we
know for sure. It will be a small event with family per our
preference, but we’ll certainly pull together a party to celebrate
so all of our friends can be a part of the experience.
I will post more news here on my blog as I am able.
With a big heart,
Craig

Left Hand – 9 New Paintings
This series of work titled “Left Hand” is inspired by the philosophical & creative approach to making art with one’s non-dominant hand. Each painting is harmonious and congruent with my standard of gaining a stronger sense of truth. The process is deliberately vulnerable and as a result, mysteriously captivating.
Much research has been done on artists using the non-dominate hand during the creative process. One in particular is Capacchione, the author of “Living With Feeling: The Art of Emotional Expression”.
(Lucia Capacchione, Ph.D) Lucia’s research shows that, right handed or left handed, writing and imaging with the non-dominant hand gives greater access to the right hemispheric functions like feeling, intuition, creativity and inner wisdom and spirituality. When a dialog occurs between the left and right hemispheres of the brain, both emotions and thoughts are more fully expressed and understood.
At the onset of producing these paintings I first thought they could potentially be difficult to create. My experience resulted in quite the opposite. I found it wasn’t hard to paint with my left hand, and actually found it quite meditative. There was little to no difference between the first painting and the final in this body of work. The series became less focused on being a ‘left hand project’ and more of an experience. It was in this process that I was able to rid myself of controlled patterns and find a new understanding of being in the moment. Broken patterns were achieved rapidly by laying aside traditional brushes and gravitating toward pallet knives, sticks, and hand-made tools. Each object allowed greater ease of applying paint and creating texture to achieve unity.
